How much does Kindgericht cost?
You can use Kindgericht for free with 1 child and 3 scans. The full version with unlimited children and scans plus the detail view for each child (nutrition facts, recommendation, daily amount) costs a one-time €4.99 – no subscription, no ads. The purchase goes through the App Store and can be restored on new devices with the same Apple ID.
A product isn't found – what can I do?
Kindgericht uses open product databases such as Open Food Facts. Not every product is listed there. You can add the product to Open Food Facts yourself for free – after that, Kindgericht will find it too.
Why is a product green for one child and orange for another?
The rating is individual for each child: age, allergies, intolerances and diet all play a role. The reason is shown in small print below the rating; tap the child to see details.
Why is a product red when the allergen is only listed as a trace?
With allergies, even traces can trigger reactions. That's why Kindgericht rates “may contain traces” as not recommended for allergies, to be on the safe side. For intolerances such as lactose, there is only a note.
Why are nuts red for my child?
Whole nuts, popcorn and hard sweets can easily be inhaled by children under 5. Ground nuts or nut butter, on the other hand, are fine.
What does “Typical ingredients – not from the manufacturer” mean?
For some products, the ingredient list is missing from the database. For clear-cut products such as trail mix, pasta or hummus, Kindgericht then assumes the typical ingredients so that allergies can still be checked. The packaging always takes precedence.
What do “similar products” and “Example” on the product image mean?
If nutrition data, ingredients or the product image are missing from the database, Kindgericht searches Open Food Facts for products with a similar name. Nutrition values are then the average of these products, and the ingredients come from the best match. An image of a similar product is labelled “Example” – it is not the scanned product. The packaging always takes precedence.
Where does a product’s data come from?
The source is shown at the bottom of the expanded nutrition, ingredients and additives sections – for example “Source: Open Food Facts”. For estimated values, the note appears at the top of the section.
Can I see how much is in the whole pack?
Yes. In a child's detail view, tap the nutrition bars – they switch between the values for one portion and for the whole pack. The colour adjusts accordingly.
The nutrition values don't match the packaging.
The data comes from open databases and may be outdated or incorrect. The packaging always takes precedence. You can enter corrections directly on Open Food Facts.
How do I back up my data?
Under Settings → iCloud Backup, your children's data is saved in your own iCloud, and your saved products too if you like. After reinstalling, the app offers to restore them.
How do I delete all data?
Under Settings → Delete all data – either only on the iPhone or in your iCloud as well.
Does the app replace nutritional advice?
No. Kindgericht is a guide for shopping. For health questions, please contact your paediatrician or a nutrition professional.
Any questions?
Feel free to write to me – ideally with a screenshot, the product name or barcode and the child's age. German or English is fine.
